newROOTS: We recently received a letter from an inmate in Maine who heard about us through Mother Earth News. He wasn’t asking for our catalog to shop—but for inspiration. When he’s released, he hopes to start a new life rooted in homesteading. Stories like his remind us that reuse isn’t just about materials… it’s about second chances.

Over Engineered: “Up here in the Dakotas, we use old Steel Guardrail for corral fencing. If that Steel Guardrail can stand up to 70 mph car crashes, it could certainly stand up to a raging 2,000 lb bull. It is way over engineered for fencing, but that makes it a tremendous value for us ranchers.” – John Hover in South Dakota
NOTE: With “repurposing”, like John correctly observes, you often get used materials that are way over engineered for their 2nd life. But, this over engineering comes so cheap because the material is used.
