“repurposed”FAIL: We had someone ask what happens to old, retired hot air balloons and specifically the balloon fabric. This balloon fabric was a great candidate for “repurposing” in our minds. So, we started our due diligence. Some materials just don’t work for “repurposing”…in this case foul odor.
Due Diligence: “Many times balloons have what is called hydrolysis, and smells terrible. The smell cannot effectively be removed without causing damage to the fabric.” – Tim Hampton
“Most succumb to mold as the heat and dampness destroys the original inhibitors. The odor given off smells like someone has been violently sick in the bag and over time is allowed to fester.” – Phil
“Balloons are flown by burning liquid propane and once they reach end-of-life they do, and always will, smell like burnt propane. It isn’t a slight smell either and can often be overpowering with an older balloon.” – Robbie
