How We Do It: We subscribe to a huge number of trade journals across very diverse industrial sectors. One of the things we do is look at the advertisements in the magazines. We look for products that are being manufactured new where we know of a used material that might be able to be substituted. We call this “Substitutionary Thinking”!
Case Study: A company is advertising nest pads in the trade magazine Poultry USA. The nest pads are just 1 1/2″ plastic, shag carpeting used to lay on the hen cages to cushion the eggs after they’re laid to keep them from cracking.
Substitutionary Thinking: used Turf from football and soccer fields is 1 1/2″ plastic, shag carpeting that could probably do the same job if cut into small little squares.

Customer Feedback: “We grabbed some Treated Wood Guardrail Timbers and turned them into borders for our butterfly garden. They’ve got that solid, weathered look already, so it came together quick and actually looks like it belongs out there. Now it’s all filled in with flowers, and we’ve got butterflies showing up every day, way better than just a plain patch of dirt.” – Janice in Texas

TEACHING: Natural prey animals like cattle, bison, etc. are very wary when anything from a coyote to a human approaches. To keep animals calm in the corrals, many livestock owners use materials to create visual barriers between the pens. This is an ideal “repurpose” for used rubber Conveyor Belting from the mining industry. ** A,C,E’s are opaque, extremely tough, flexible, weather resistant, etc. The Conveyor Belting will last for decades in these corrals!
