Few upgrades match the timeless appeal of hardwood floors. When you want the look of solid wood with added durability and easier installation, engineered hardwood flooring delivers. It’s built to handle daily wear and tear while providing that authentic wood finish homeowners love.

To make the most of your new flooring, you need proper installation and smart maintenance from the start. Here’s a complete guide to help you through every step.

Pre-Installation Preparation

Before you even open a box of planks, take time to prepare your space. Good prep leads to a smoother installation and longer-lasting results.

1. Acclimate the Flooring

Bring the flooring into the room where it will be installed. Let it sit for 48 to 72 hours with the boxes opened slightly so the planks can breathe. This allows them to adjust to the room’s humidity and temperature, preventing warping or shifting after installation.

2. Check the Subfloor

A clean, level, and dry subfloor is essential. Sweep away any dust, remove old adhesive, and check for dips or high spots. Use a long level to make sure the floor is flat within 3/16 of an inch over a 10-foot span. Patch low areas with leveling compound and sand down high spots if needed.

3. Gather Your Tools and Materials

You’ll need:

  • Tape measure

  • Chalk line

  • Flooring spacers

  • Rubber mallet

  • Flooring nailer or stapler (if using nail-down method)

  • Wood flooring adhesive (for glue-down method)

  • Moisture barrier (if installing over concrete)

  • Saw for cutting planks

Choosing the Right Installation Method

There are three main ways to install engineered hardwood flooring: glue-down, nail-down, and floating. Each method works best in certain situations, depending on the subfloor and room type.

Floating Installation

This method is great for DIYers. Planks click together and float over the subfloor without glue or nails. It works well over concrete or existing flooring and requires underlayment to reduce noise and add cushioning. Always leave a 1/4″ expansion gap around the perimeter, and use spacers to maintain that gap during installation.

Glue-Down Installation

Glue-down offers a strong, permanent bond. Trowel adhesive evenly onto the subfloor and place each plank into the glue. Press down firmly and tap the planks together with a mallet and tapping block to lock them into place. Work in small sections so the glue doesn’t dry before planks go down.

Nail-Down Installation

This traditional method anchors planks to a wooden subfloor using a flooring nailer. Start at one wall, and face-nail the first row to secure it. After that, blind-nail through the tongue at a 45-degree angle. Continue row by row, staggering joints and trimming boards as needed.

Post-Installation Tips

Once your floor is installed, give it at least 24 hours to settle before walking on it or moving furniture in. For glue-down installs, wait 48 hours before heavy traffic or cleaning.

Install baseboards or quarter-round molding to cover the expansion gap and give the room a finished look. Avoid nailing these into the flooring itself—secure them to the wall instead.

Caring for Your New Floors

Proper maintenance protects your investment and keeps your floors looking fresh for years.

1. Clean Regularly

Sweep or vacuum frequently using a soft brush attachment. Use a damp mop with a wood-safe cleaner for occasional deeper cleaning. Avoid excessive water and harsh chemicals.

2. Prevent Scratches and Dents

Place felt pads under furniture legs, and lift furniture instead of dragging it. Use rugs in high-traffic zones and at entrances to catch dirt and debris before it hits the floor.

3. Handle Spills Quickly

Wipe up liquids as soon as they hit the floor. Moisture that seeps between planks can damage the layers below and cause swelling.

Engineered hardwood flooring gives you the best of both worlds: the beauty of real wood and the strength of a multi-layered design. By following proper installation steps and adopting a few smart maintenance habits, you can enjoy your floors for decades. Whether you’re upgrading one room or the whole house, a well-installed floor adds lasting style and value.
