Military “repurpose”; Millwright Mezzanine; Calming Wary Prey Animals

How We Do It: We subscribe to a huge number of trade journals across very diverse industrial sectors. One of the things we do is look at the advertisements in the magazines. We look for products that are being manufactured new where we know of a used material that might be able to be substituted. We call this “Substitutionary Thinking”!
Case Study: A company is advertising sling guard protectors in the trade magazine Wire Rope News. The protectors are just tough-jacketed, sock-like material used to slip on the high dollar slings to save them from wear and tear.
Substitutionary Thinking: Used Fire Hose is a tough-jacketed, sock-like material that could probably do the same job if cut into 3′, 6′, 9′ lengths!
Q: Do you have another good example of “Substitutionary Thinking”? Email Us Details!

TEACHING: Natural prey animals like cattle, bison, etc. are very wary when anything from a coyote to a human approaches. To keep animals calm in the corrals, many livestock owners use materials to create visual barriers between the pens. This is an ideal “repurpose” for used rubber Conveyor Belting from the mining industry. ** A,C,E’s are opaque, extremely tough, flexible, weather resistant, etc. The Conveyor Belting will last for decades in these corrals!
** A,C,E = Attributes, Characteristics, Engineering

Military History: In 1988, temperatures dropped to -30°F at Ellsworth AFB outside Rapid City. The base had 6 B-1B bombers on alert. The alert facility’s heating plant failed. If the water mains froze, the fire suppression system would be dead. At a school on the base they had a 50-foot wall of slate chalkboards — 2 inches thick, designed in the 1950s as fallout shelter walls. Slate holds heat. They demo’d the slate boards and lined the boards against the wall of the heating plant, then ran jet engine heaters on the other side. The slate absorbed the heat and radiated it into the pipe chase for 36 hours. The pipes didn’t freeze. The bombers stayed on alert. The school got new whiteboards. The invoice said: “Chalkboards ‘repurposed’ for mission critical thermal retention.”

WANTED: “I’m looking for former factory sites that have been demolished years or decades ago. I wondered if your readers could help me locate such old, torn down factory sites. A big clue as to old demo’d factory sites is that there are parking lots, foundations, or other concrete still on the site. Any clues would be appreciated!” – Mark
Q: Do have an old abandoned factory site in your community or area? If you can help Mark out, Email Damon the name and location of the former factory, and we’ll forward it to Mark!
