“repurposed”PROJECT: An excavation contractor recently purchased some Railroad Rails to install on his shop floor, with plans to pour concrete up to about 1/4 inch below the top of the rail. The slightly raised rail will act as a protective barrier, preventing the heavy tracked equipment he repairs from damaging the concrete surface.

BEFORE: This is the used Steel Guardrail off the sides of highways. When a DOT widens or repairs a section of highway they always come back with new guardrail. (We’re not sure why they don’t re-use the perfectly good Guardrail!?!) If it is good enough to hold back 70mph cars then it should more than suffice as fencing for wild mustangs!

For tax purposes, a company is able to take a deduction on their tax return for obsolete inventory if they are no longer able to use the inventory in a “normal” manner or if the inventory can longer be sold at its “normal” price. The ability to take a tax deduction for obsolete inventory can only occur if the inventory is disposed of in 1 of 3 ways: Selling it – This does not mean selling the inventory at a reduced price to your existing customer base. Rather, this is the sale of inventory to a place such as a liquidator or junkyard…like repurposedMATERIALS. The deduction received in this case is equal to the amount of the fair market value, less you are able to recover for the item.
